Who are we?
18 years working towards energy generation for Colombia
In 2004, we set ourselves the goal of participating in Colombia’s gas market with the exploration and production of hydrocarbons in the Cesar-Ranchería basin. Today, thanks to our first production project: “The North Caporo Development Area”, we create energy and progress for the country.
Our history
Drummond through the years
1935
Drummond Company
In 1935 H.E. Drummond founded the company H.E. Drummond Coal Company in Sipsey, Alabama, supplying coal for homes and agricultural use. He financed his activity with a $300 loan from the Walker County Bank of Jasper, Alabama, giving three mules as collateral.
With the death of H.E. Drummond in 1956, the business passed to the second generation of Drummond family members, and in the 1960s the coal production went from 200,000 tons to 1,500,000 tons per year and undertook a major capital expansion program to establish itself as the largest open-pit mining company in Alabama.
1985
Drummond Ltd.
In 1985, Drummond signed the first coal concession contract in Colombia called La Loma, location of the Pribbenow Mine which began production in 1995.
In 1997, Drummond signed the contract for the exploitation of coal called El Descanso where the mine of the same name is located.
The two mines are connected by 195 kilometers of railway, with Puerto Drummond –one of the most modern in the region, with a direct loading system and the capacity to export up to 60 million tons per year– in Ciénaga, Magdalena.
In 2021, Drummond celebrated six consecutive years of being the largest producer and exporter of coal — close to 30 million tons transported to more than 24 countries around the world.
2004
Drummond Energy
In 2004, Drummond acquired the rights to explore and produce hydrocarbons in the La Loma area. The initial objective of this project was to self-supply the gas consumption of the power generation plant of the mining complex, and in the future, to participate in the country's gas market.
The exploratory works took place for 8 years to establish the hydrocarbon deposits that were technically and economically viable for their development. Finally, in 2012, this objective was achieved with the Declaration of Commerciality of the La Loma Field, presented to the ANH to develop a methane gas deposit associated with coal seams.
In the framework of the La Loma Field, between 2017 and 2018, Drummond developed the exploratory phase of the first production pilot of 15 wells, carrying out its operations and building its field production facilities such as the CPF, the water plant, lines of water and gas conduction, electrical automation system and the drilling of two injection wells. This is the first project of this nature developed in Colombia.
In parallel, Drummond has signed other hydrocarbon contracts present in the Cesar Ranchería Basin. Drummond is currently the operator of 6 hydrocarbon contracts: La Loma, La Loma Adicional, Río Ranchería, E&P CR-2, E&P CR-3, and E&P CR-4.
Drummond Energy, Inc. is currently the operator of the six aforementioned hydrocarbon contracts.
2021
Solar Energy
In 2021, feasibility studies were conducted for the development of a photovoltaic solar energy generation project in the mining operations area, named the "Cañahuate Photovoltaic Solar Park." The goal is to reduce CO2 emissions from operations, diversify the company's energy matrix, contribute to Sustainable Development Goals, align with the emission reduction targets of the National Government, and take a further step toward energy transition.
In 2023, the ANLA (National Authority of Environmental Licenses) granted the environmental license for the construction of the "CAÑAHUATE PHOTVOLTAIC SOLAR PARK 240 MW (megawatts)." The first phase of the Cañahuate I photovoltaic solar park will have a capacity of 54 MWac (megawatts in alternating current) and will be constructed under the scope of this license. This initial phase is expected to be operational in the second half of 2024, marking another step towards carbon neutrality.
Mission / Vision
Our commitment is to work responsibly generating energy for homes in Colombia. We contribute to the development of the regions in which we operate.
Mission
Vision
To be a leader in natural gas and other hydrocarbons production in an innovative, competitive and reliable way through efficient and sustainable operations.
